Academia.edu - The Facebook for Academics (Peter MELLALIEU)
Whilst completing half-decade review of scholarly outputs, I became somewhat désolé by the dismal number of times my papers were cited according to Google Scholar. Fortuitously, I discovered the site Academia.edu. Academia.edu is a serious, professional ‘Facebook for Academics’. The site facilitates discovering academics and graduate students world-wide who have similar scholarly interests, and enables easy ‘opening of communications’ as you choose to follow each other’s interests.
I have now uploaded my lifetime of publications (approx 75). This is leading to some extraordinary outcomes! One conference paper (Mellalieu, 1998), for instance, has now been viewed over 100 times in the last 30 days. In the last month, I have received 547 views of my documents, and over 100 views of my professional profile. Eighteen people are now following what I do academically. Hopefully, these views will lead to a few more scholarly citations!… invitations to conferences, fame, fortune … and promotion!
A nice feature of Academia.edu is that you get a day-by-day report of who is viewing what of your corpus pupblicati. Furthermore, you receive detailed web analytics of the keywords that have been used to locate your publications, either from Google searches, or searches via Academia.edu. In other words, all your papers uploaded to Academia.edu become searchable fairly quickly via Google.
